GODFREY DREHER
Our Chapter's Namesake
Our chapter was chartered in October 2009. Our chapter’s namesake Godfrey Dreher (1720-1790) was an early German settler in what is now the Corley Mill Road area of Lexington County, SC. He provided supplies to the Patriot army and his family repulsed a force of British soldiers dispatched to destroy their home and grist mill in 1781.
-
Elder son Godfrey Dreher, Junior (1760-1815) was a teenager when he enlisted and rose to the rank of captain in Colonel Richard Hampton’s Regiment of Light Dragoons. He was home on furlough at the time of the attack and led in its defense.
-
Godfrey Dreher Senior’s younger son John (1765-1847) also participated in the defense of the Dreher homestead.
-
Godfrey Dreher Senior’s sons-in-law Johannes Kinsler and Gabriel Friday served as captains in the South Carolina Militia.
Godfrey Dreher and his family personified the courage and spirit of independence that gave birth to America.
