Residential HVAC contractors do three
things: Design, Install and Service systems. With the introduction of the 8th
Edition of Manual J in 2002, system design now can be more
accurate than ever before. In just three days, students gain a
working understanding of the residential HVAC design process.
On day one, students will learn the new "MJ8" procedure that produces improved equipment sizing loads for the following:
single-family detached homes,
small multi-unit structures,
condominiums,
town houses and
manufactured homes.
MJ8 also accommodates homes with large south-facing glass area or rooms with unusually large glass area.
It is also sensitive to an increased variety of issues related to construction materials and methods including:
Fenestration loads for glass rated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC)
Improved duct load models
Improved methods for estimation the effect of internal and external shading devices, including insect screens
Sensitivity to latitude and altitude
Sensitivity to skylight to roofing material, curb construction and light shaft construction.
Day one finishes up discussing the essentials of heating and cooling equipment selection.
Day two begins by focusing on air flow fundamentals and the three goals of professional duct design:
Design a duct system with a pressure drop that is compatible with the blower’s available static pressure.
Deliver the right air to the right rooms
Control air-side noise
Air-side design continues with a discussion of grille, register and diffuser selection. Students learn the importance of selecting terminals that will provide adequate throw while minimizing noise and drafts. Day two finishes up with a one hour review and then a one-hour quiz to evaluate students' learning progress.
Day three focuses on students learning residential HVAC system design using Right-Suite for Residential J8. Using this computer-assisted design software, students perform room-by-room load calculations and complete duct designs on three homes.
